As my drawing grew out of my dancing, painting grew from my
drawing, and only from that. Growing up I had no experience with
it, and never imagined myself doing it. Working in graphite was
totally satisfying and it wasn't until the magazines started requesting
color illos that I was 'pushed' into painting. Helen Van Wyck's
show on public television was schoolroom, but it wasn't easy.
For the longest time, months and months, I mucked about. Eventually
I caught on, and started replacing the frustration with satisfaction.
Still, to this day, I don't know when I start out where a new
painting is going . I just choose a canvas, then decide on an
image that will 'fit' the proportions of the canvas, and with
no preliminaries (drawing or color studies) begin.
